Carey White & Chad Luhn
When Carey White met Chad Luhn at the house of a mutual friend, he asked for her number pretty quickly. At the time, she was a student at Southern Methodist University and he was a recent graduate of SMU’s MBA program. “I gave him my number, but he thought it was fake because it was so easy to remember,” says Carey. So Chad told Carey that if she didn’t want to go out with him she should just say so.
Once Chad realized Carey wasn’t pulling a fast one, their story began. And after dating for seven years, he popped the question at their Devonshire home surrounded by twinkling candles.
Carey spends her days designing other people’s weddings as the wedding event manager at Dr Delphinium. So when it came to planning her own, she wanted a low-key wedding where decisions were simple and they could spend quality time with guests. They decided on a November destination wedding in Cabo San Lucas. They chose the venue, printed the invitations, and booked flights.
But then a hurricane hit.
Carey’s expertise and cool head were put to use when the couple had to start from scratch and plan another wedding for the following March. “Everybody said I remained calm. It was more of an inner freakout,” she recalls. They moved around venues, called their guests to explain, and printed another batch of invites with the new date.
They moved the wedding to the Hacienda BeachClub, a romantic hotel that was the site of their original rehearsal dinner. They discovered Flora Farms, a 10-acre organic farm and restaurant in the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains, and booked it for their “White Party” rehearsal dinner.
Flora Farms took care of all of the details so Carey and Chad just had to show up. “I was a relaxed bride,” Carey says. “I asked my planner that day, ‘I know we are having fish tonight—but do you know what kind?’”
For the wedding day on March 2, 2015, Carey kept it simple. “After we had to switch hotels and plan it twice, I only did personal flowers,” she says. “I didn’t even do flowers at the reception.” The florist shipped in cymbidium orchids, sweet pea, ranunculus, and garden roses from Holland and created pastel bouquets for the bride and her wedding party.
“Since I’ve worked at Dr Delphinium and previously for Todd Events, I sort of set an expectation for the reception. I wanted something to happen every 45 minutes,” she laughs. They hired fire dancers and a DJ and brought in fun props for their 70 guests.
After all was said and done, Carey would do it again—come rain, wind, or natural disaster. “I was just so happy,” she says. “I wish I could do it again and enjoy it 100 times over.”
