Thanks to Kari Feinstein, owner of Enlighten MD, for answering this week’s reader question:
I’m interested in having a full brow look for my big day. Is microblading the right option for me?
Microblading is a semi-permanent pigmentation process that uses several tiny blades to give thickness, shape, color, and definition to eyebrows. Unlike traditional cosmetic tattoos that are applied to the dermis, a deeper layer of skin, microblading is applied to the epidermis, a layer of skin closer to the surface. This technique gives the hair strokes a more natural, fine, feathered look and lasts for up to one year. This method uses 100% natural pigments that are matched specifically to each person’s skin and brow color. People who have thinning eyebrows, patches of undergrowth or overgrowth, or even people suffering from skin conditions such as alopecia will greatly benefit from the self confidence that is instilled with the prefect eyebrows framing their face.
Pros of getting it done before your wedding day: When it comes to your face, it’s all about the details. Beautiful eyebrows can be as dramatic as beautiful lashes and I love that the bold brow is really having a moment right now. Brides want their entire look to be flawless, from their shoes all the way up to their hair and makeup, and because eyebrows frame the eye, having the perfect arch is a necessity to really sparkle on your wedding day. Unfortunately, most people (Brooke Shields aside) aren’t blessed with beautiful natural brows that are shaped the way they would like. Microblading makes it possible to give our clients the brows they always wished for, whether it’s simply improving good brows or completely making over sad ones. Brides who are interested in microblading prior to their wedding should schedule a consultation to see how the procedure might benefit them and to discuss timing before their big day.
Timeline: A typical microblading consult lasts around 30 minutes and is extremely important in order to discuss goals and expectations prior to the procedure. The actual microblading takes about one hour and 20 minutes with a six-week follow-up where a touch up may be necessary. There really is no “downtime” after microblading; however, brows will appear darker for the first week and it may take up to two weeks for the brows to fully heal. There’s also no sweating for 48 hours after the procedure, so the Bridal Body Workout will have to take a backseat to the brows for a few days.
Brides should give themselves at least two months before their wedding day to have the microblading done. But the bonus is the beautiful brows will last far beyond the honeymoon phase if they are maintained well!
