Rhys Studebaker & Russell Peterson

After noticing Russell on a dating website, Rhys started up a virtual conversation. They emailed back and forth and decided on a “quick” dinner date on Valentine’s Day weekend.  However, the couple was so enamored with each other that dinner ended up lasting more than four hours. “The waiter started getting annoyed that we weren’t leaving because they wanted to close soon,” remembers Rhys. From there, the two became a couple.

Russell had originally planned to pop the question on a cruise down the Potomac River in Washington D.C while watching fourth of July fireworks. As luck would have it, bad weather and delayed flights canceled the trip. So Russell crafted a better plan: Propose to Rhys on a helicopter ride over Lewisville Lake while watching the Friday night fireworks display. Having made customized wine bottle labels reading “Will you marry me?” for their original dinner cruise, Russell instead brought them along on the helicopter ride.

For their wedding day on October 17, 2015, at The Windsor at Hebron Park, Rhys wanted decor that was classic and timeless–something she wouldn’t regret when she looked back on the day years later. Drawing on the fall season, Rhys and her mother chose the color marsala, the 2015 Pantone Color of the Year, as the main hue. The rich wine-red shade gave a classic elegance to the floral arrangements and bridesmaids dresses.

The first dance was particularly special to Rhys. The couple had rehearsed it leading up to the wedding, choosing a joyful, upbeat song. Rhys explains that “there was one song I really wanted to dance to, but was too afraid the waterworks would start and I didn’t want to lead our reception with that.” Their wedding planner, Meggie Francisco, suggested they play one song at the end of the night as a last dance, just Russell and Rhys. So they did just that—Meggie emptied the room so the guests could line up for the big exit. With the DJ playing the original song that Rhys selected, the newlyweds were able to have one contemplative, quiet moment together after the exciting chaos of the day. The moment remains Rhys’ favorite memory from the night.

Following the wedding, the couple jetted off to Italy and Paris for two weeks, where Rhys had wanted to visit since she was young. For Rhys and Russell, both the wedding day and honeymoon were a dream. Now they are thrilled to be starting a family, expecting their first child, a baby girl, in August. -Sophie Lidji
