Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Wed at St. George’s Chapel While the World Watches

American actress Meghan Markle, 36, married Prince Harry, 33, at St. George’s Chapel today. The new Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s nuptials were watched by millions worldwide, and ushered in a new day in the British monarchy, as the bride became a symbol of natural beauty, inclusivity, and elegance.

The Look

Markle wore simple and natural makeup and her hair back in her signature bun. The minimal and chic wedding dress by Givenchy, led by British designer Claire Waight Keller, adhered to royal standards in that it had sleeves and covered the shoulders (just slightly)—but otherwise, it was completely modern. She donned Queen Mary’s diamond bandeau tiara, borrowed from Queen Elizabeth. The Cathedral lace-trimmed veil was the perfect complement and touch of elegance, as well as diplomacy. The 16.5 feet of silk tulle was embroidered along the edges with the flowers of the 53 commonwealth countries, in addition to the flower of California.

The Decor

St. George Chapel’s was filled with white floral and greenery, which were local and in season for May, and included Markle’s favorite flower—the peony—as well as roses and foxgloves. Beech, birch, and hornbeam threaded throughout the floral. The dramatic greenery was complemented nicely by Markle’s minimal bouquet, which supposedly included forget-me-nots, Princess Diana’s favorite flower, that Prince Harry picked himself.

The Ceremony

Meghan was escorted to the wedding by her mother, Doria Ragland. She walked down the aisle by herself, trailed by a fleet of page boys and flower girls (and Princess Charlotte, an official bridesmaid) who carried her veil. Once she reached the quire, she was escorted by Prince Charles to the altar. Princess Diana’s younger sister gave the only reading. The London-based Kingdom Choir and Karen Gibson sang “Stand by Me.” An American, the Right Reverend David Conner, gave a powerful sermon on the power of love. As the couple exited the chapel and shared a kiss, “This Little Light of Mine,” played, a nod to the Civil Rights era. It’s a new era indeed.
