“One of the more stressful aspects was knowing, ‘Okay, it could rain, and we may have to, at least for the ceremony, go to a plan B,’ ” Alecia says. While the forecast predicted a 30 percent chance of rain earlier in the week, she thankfully ended up with “the most beautiful fall day.”

One of Alecia’s favorite details of the wedding was the bouquets. “My mom and I would always get up and watch the Royal Weddings,” Alecia says. “Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle had those little petite bouquets that were so simple and chic.” The smaller, lightweight bouquets, made using lily of the valley, were easy to carry and didn’t overshadow Alecia’s dress.

Alecia had already made a down payment on another dress when she found her simple, sophisticated dream gown by Australian brand Chosen. The closest store that carried it was En Blanc in Los Angeles, so she and her mom made a weekend trip out of it.

When making her wedding vision board, Alecia kept coming back to the idea of using fruit as a decorative accent. They ended up incorporating cherry tomatoes, which lent a pop of color to the tabletops. “It just set it apart from a lot of the other things that I normally see,” Alecia says.

Alecia used a blusher veil, which covers the face, for her ceremony. “Adding the veil still gave this new sense of secrecy,” she says of the choice, “and then to have Matthew lift it up and kiss me was just a good moment.”

Inspired by her family’s roots, Alecia wanted to incorporate Spanish style into her decor. Warm colors, lots of candles, and hanging lights made the Arboretum feel like a little slice of the Mediterranean.

Alecia and Matthew used an almond base with buttercream frosting for their wedding cake. Instead of a groom’s cake, Matthew chose his favorite sweet-tooth satisfiers: M&M cookies and tres leches shooters.

After about 10 years of dating and a ring-shopping trip, Alecia Urreta thought it would be impossible for Matthew Rich’s proposal to catch her off guard. The pair first met their sophomore and freshman years of high school, respectively, and eventually their playful flirting turned into something more. “I think what made our relationship strong was that we started off as friends, and we were goofing around with each other, and it made him so much more attractive to me,” Alecia remembers. After years of long-distance dating through college, Alecia knew their engagement was coming, but she never imagined a typical day doing yard work and playing with the dog outside would bring Matthew to one knee. “We stand in that backyard every day and have our coffee,” Alecia says. “We’ll be able to show our kids, ‘This is where Dad proposed to Mom.’ ”
Alecia and her bridal party got ready for the day at the Adolphus Hotel. Before heading to the Arboretum, Matthew met her at the hotel’s Century Room for portraits. This gave Alecia extra time to relax indoors and touch up hair and makeup, while also getting a second setting in her photos. For couples wanting to diversify the background of their portraits, planner and designer Lottie Fowler of Grit & Gold Event Co. recommends finding a location you are already getting ready at or that is on the way to the wedding venue to keep these portraits easy. Use of event spaces like the Century Room is of course subject to availability and may incur a fee, so make arrangements with venue management beforehand to ensure your photos go smoothly.
