Searching “bridal hair” on Pinterest will serve you with countless styles—sleek buns, beach waves, braids, etc—to consider for your big day. As with most aspects of the wedding planning process, the options and inspiration available to you are vast and maybe overwhelming, but choosing your day-of look doesn’t have to be complicated. We asked hair experts Fiona Taylor of Faces by Fiona, Anita Brown of Elan Makeup Studio, and Mayra Rams-Sanabria of My Fabulous Faces what a bride should consider when choosing her wedding hairstyle, including helpful insights and current trends.
All three of our experts agreed that choosing something timeless over trendy will allow your wedding photos to stand the test of time, but that doesn’t mean you can’t experiment with popular styles. A center part with the front pieces of hair slicked down and tied underneath has been a common request the past six months, according to Anita. Low chignons, ballerina buns, and high twists are also popular updo requests with old Hollywood curls, beach waves, and half up/half down styles being preferred for down-dos.
While some of these looks are trendier than others, Fiona and Anita advise against anything that strays too far from your current style. “Something that’s trendy is definitely going to be dating the look to that time period, whether it’s retro or what’s happening right now,” says Fiona, author of The Bridal Blueprint.
If you cringe at the thought of your hair looking old fashioned by your silver anniversary, opt for a classic style, like wearing your hair’s natural curl pattern—an elegant option because it’s true to yourself. When in doubt? Go with what you’re most comfortable with. An easy way to figure this out is to ask yourself what you wear on a daily basis. If you wear your hair down to work everyday, you might feel exposed with your hair up, for example. “At the end of the day, you have to choose something that you won’t feel weird wearing,” says Fiona.
And of course, your stylist is there to help. If you’re torn between two opposing styles, consider a blend of old and new. “Our brides like a modern twist on the classics,” Mayra says. “The old low chignon was a little too restrained in years past, now brides request a chignon that looks a little more organic and less intentional with a few soft tendrils framing their faces.” Your stylist will also be able to tell you what works best with you gown and will likely ask to see a picture of your dress to determine your style and consider elements like beading, lace, or the gown’s neckline.
Above all, prioritize your comfort and preferences. Take advantage of trial runs, and be sure to speak up if you’re not in love with your look. Your hair team is there to champion your vision, so sit back, relax, and trust their expertise!
