A “Gilmore Girls”-Inspired Garden Wedding at Clark Gardens

Joseph Pao-Wu and Sean Ku, who work as buyers at Walmart (he is in charge of all refrigerated dough, cream cheese, and bagels, and she is the assistant buyer for girls apparel), met during undergrad at the University of Texas.

It all began at a Christian fellowship retreat. Sean had just transferred, and Joseph about to graduate. “We later ran into each other in downtown Austin, and he asked me when we were going to hang out. I was confused because we didn’t really know each other!” says Sean. A first date turned into midnight snacks and a four hour long conversation, which then turned real dinner date, and, three and half years later, a proposal.

The couple, who are based in Bentonville, Arkansas (where Walmart Corporate is headquartered) married on May 13, 2017. Sean was set on an outdoor wedding, inspired by a scene from the show “Gilmore Girls,” where Rory dances with Logan and friends out in nature, wearing tuxes and elegant ballgowns. Clark Gardens, in Weatherford, Texas, was the natural choice for a scenic spring backdrop.

Minimal gold and glass geo terrariums served as the footing for the décor. The couple incorporated them as centerpieces, pairing the metallic accent with a color palette of sea glass blue, navy, and hints of blush. “I wanted to ensure that everything we did was timeless and uniquely ‘us,’” says Sean. Sean loves marble, and incorporated that as an elemental texture in the invitations, the wedding cake, and name cards.

When Sean looks back on her wedding, it was the first look that really stood out. “I was so adamantly against it at first,” she says, but due to scheduling constraints, it was in their best interest to have one. It turned out to be the sweetest moment of the day. Joseph is a big crier, and Sean admits that she is not—but neither of them could hold back the tears. “This was the day we had been praying, dreaming, and wishing for, and getting to see each other in this private moment was so incredible,” says Sean.

The wedding out of a springtime dream. “I found myself asking, ‘Is this real?’ throughout the entire day and taking little moments to be grateful,” says Sean. The evening ended with her own dance scene: a dance floor filled with everyone from her dad’s business partners to her 85-year-old grandmother.
