Letter Perfect: A floral crest bearing the couple’s initials adorned the stationery set by Paradise Design Co. and appeared throughout the wedding-day details. “We used this monogram as a jumping-off point for the design process,” says planner Jacqueline Hill of Jacqueline Events.

Natural Wonder: Of her Reem Acra wedding gown, Shelby says she loved the way the sequins on the dress looked like faux bois. “I felt like it really played into the flowers and the mountains and the trees,” she says.

Ace of Laces: Shelby’s platform sneakers were custom painted by muralist Vivian Elmore, whom Shelby knows through her work as an interior designer.

Wild Child: The couple chose The Club at Crested Butte for both the ceremony and the reception. Shelby says she wanted the event design to enhance the wildflowers in the landscape.

Feeling Blue: Shelby selected a color palette—soft blue—and asked her bridesmaids and bridesman to pick their own wedding attire. Her maid of honor stands out in a blue-and-white patterned dress that’s cohesive with the others.

Snap Happy: One of the first decisions Shelby and Alec made when planning their wedding was hiring photographer Charla Storey, who also took their engagement photos. “Having her as a cohesive look to the wedding was really important to me,” Shelby says.

Taking a Page: The floral escort cards were made of pages extracted from a reference book Shelby owns called The Flower Color Guide.

His and Hers: The bride’s cake from Fancy Cakes by Lauren was vanilla with a cinnamon cream cheese frosting. The groom’s cake, which was shaped like a horned frog, paid homage to the Alec’s alma mater, Texas Christian University—which Shelby says was their very own Steel Magnolias moment.

Table Toppers: A thoughtful interior designer herself, Shelby purchased these rattan chargers through Klatso on Etsy, which now bring back happy wedding-day memories when they’re used at home. The cloth napkins, embroidered with various wildflower details, were a custom creation by Great Notations.

Local Branch: Topiaries were always part of Shelby’s vision for her wedding, but she quickly encountered a roadblock. “You cannot get topiaries in Colorado,” she says. Instead, florist Bramble & Bloom made faux topiaries with a Colorado twist—the trunks were made from aspen tree branches.

Shelby Owens & Alec Zogas
July 24, 2021
For Shelby Owens and Alec Zogas, the town of Crested Butte, Colorado, marks the beginning of their forever. Mutual friends had tried to set them up in Dallas many times, but when the pair found themselves both in the Rocky Mountain town one New Year’s, there was no denying it was kismet. Once engaged, the couple decided to celebrate their nuptials where their love story began, while blooms were still plentiful from the destination’s annual wildflower festival.
“I wanted something unique to us,” says Shelby, who sought to enhance the wildflower aspect with a natural, undone feel. The result: a flower-filled, sunny outdoor ceremony and indoor reception full of personal details and whimsy. —Mary Grace Granados
