“Wedding photos last forever,” said everyone ever. And while most people may give you this piece of advice during gown try-ons or photographer selections, brides should also consider how their day-of hair and makeup will affect their overall look in the infamous everlasting photos. Updos or down-dos, neutral or bold lips, the right HAMU artist will help guide you through the myriad of bridal beauty choices. Experts like the Dream Day hair and makeup vendor, Mayra Rams-Sanabria from My Fabulous Faces, have experience that lends them to advise brides on which styles will work best with their wedding dress, venue, time of year, skin tone, face shape, etc. We spoke with Mayra on what her process looks like when taking on new clients, why a trial run is beneficial to brides, and more.

What does your HAMU selection process look like for new clients?
When we meet with a bride for the first time for her hair and makeup trial run, we ask lots of questions to help us determined her personal preferences. Every bride is different with varying personalities and styles. Our goal is to always exceed a bride’s expectations by understanding her own vision. With communication, together we can achieve that perfect look.
What is your signature style for day-of hair and makeup?
Our signature look is always timeless, classic, effortless beauty. Elevating beauty, not transforming beauty, is the main reason our clients come to us in the first place. Brides want to look like their very best and most fabulous version of themselves. They hope to be able to look at their wedding photos many years from the day of their wedding and not think, “What was I thinking??” Ha! That’s our magic touch!
What are some of your go-to products for day-of makeup looks?
First, we have to take into account that wedding day will be a long day. There will be pre-ceremony and post-ceremony photos, and if it’s a summer wedding, the high temperatures can wreak havoc on a hair and makeup look. There will be tears, laughter, kissing, eating, and drinking! The products we use need to be water and heat resistant. After our many years working in the booming beauty industry, we have a long list of favorite go-to products, but there isn’t one single brand that fits all. Hair and skin type, age, coloring, preferences, etc., will dictate our product preference and selection.
Why is a hair and makeup trial run beneficial?
Trial runs are a must. It’s the perfect opportunity to meet the hairstylist and makeup artist to understand their skill level and to ensure everyone has a clear understanding of expectations and goals. It’s also the session to try different hairstyle and makeup options and to tweak the bridal look until the bride feels it’s perfect. Time is of the essence on wedding day, so the bride should feel relaxed, confident, and free of having to make last minute decisions so she can enjoy her big day to the fullest.
How can a bride switch up their look between wedding and reception if desired?
Our brides have the choice to keep us “on call” for a second reception look, and many choose to do so. A smokier eyeor a little extra pop of color on the lips is a great way to change up your makeup look. If a chignon was worn for the walk down the aisle, letting the bride’s hair down in deep waves is a simple and easy way to feel refreshed and ready to party!
