Planning a “Dream Day,” Week Six: Designing Your Wedding Florals

Now that Macy and Ethan have been named the winners of our Dream Day Giveaway, they’ve got a wedding to plan! You’re invited to accompany them as they plan each element of their big day with our partner vendors, leading up to one special celebration on September 10 at The Mason Dallas. If you’re planning your own wedding, be sure to follow along for tips and insight on what to expect with each step, what to know going into every meeting, and how to make sure your path to the altar is a smooth one.

From personal bouquets to flower arches and table arrangements, florals are an integral part of a wedding and can make a huge difference in your big day’s style and feel. For brides who lack flower expertise, choosing florals for a wedding can be a daunting task. Thankfully, a great floral vendor can step in to help you gather inspiration and seamlessly bring your vision to life. This week, our Dream Day Giveaway couple, Macy and Ethan, share how Sophie Cox and Mazzi Stevens of Blushington Blooms helped them capture and elevate their ideas to cast a vision for their wedding florals. Sophie and Mazzi also share their advice on choosing wedding flowers and answer questions about prototype days and creating a flower budget.

Tell us about your initial meeting with Blushington Blooms!

Macy: Everyone at Blushington Blooms was amazing. I don’t know much about wedding florals, but I knew I wanted a neutral palette and garden-like flowers. They took that idea and ran with it, giving us so many other ideas and examples of their work to help paint a picture of what it would look like when finished. They really know what they’re talking about!

Ethan: I didn’t know what to expect but was very impressed by their ideas, designs, and how seamless they made the process. We never dreamed we would get to have this many flowers for a wedding of this magnitude, so it’s still hard to imagine, but I’m really excited to see the finished product.

What is your floral vision for your wedding? Are there any special floral elements you are particularly excited about?

Macy: I did have a vision coming in, but it did not quite match the venue. I really liked an asymmetric floral altar arch but with the steps and space at The Mason, it didn’t quite fit. So, they took that idea and changed it to work better with the space and still match what I envisioned, which I really appreciated. For special floral elements, Ethan is excited about having personal florals for our family members who can make it to the wedding, and I’m excited about the disco balls in our reception flowers. I think it will be such a fun way to let everyone know the party has started!

Sophie and Mazzi, tell us about your meeting with Macy and Ethan!

Sophie and Mazzi: Macy and Ethan are a super fun couple. You can tell their love is genuine, and it shows in the way they talk to each other and how they think about their future wedding day. We really want to capture their vision and accentuate The Mason, as it’s already a beautiful venue on its own. Though it doesn’t need an excessive number of florals, flowers will still have a strong presence at their wedding, in ways that flow and align with their vision. Macy and Ethan are picturing lots of lush greenery and florals in white, ivory, and cream. Their style is timeless and classic with a whimsical flair. Macy and Ethan have given us a lot of creative freedom, so we hope it exceeds their expectations!

What design did they decide on for their wedding? Are there going to be any special floral elements to look for?

Sophie and Mazzi: We are going to stick to a traditional palette, ideally full of garnet roses, sweet pea, and ranunculus, keeping it very feminine but also airy, with lots of texture and movement. We also talked about their personal flowers, which a great opportunity to accentuate your flair as a bride or groom. For Ethan, we talked about doing a floral pocket square. This is a modern take on the boutonniere, where there is a miniature arrangement coming of the pocket of a tux or suit. We’re very excited for the flower girl baskets, which will be a modern, garden-style basket, doubling as a flower petal vessel and living floral arrangement.

What does your process look like when working with couples?

Sophie and Mazzi: We have a couple different options for meetings and consultations. We can meet in-person, over the phone, or via Zoom. In the consultation, we focus on narrowing down the ideal wedding vision and talking through the personal flowers, specifically quantities, color, structure, and greenery-to-floral ratio. Then, our team of designers spends time on custom-curated mood boards that combine photos of our work with photos our clients have found, so we can build the bridge between their vision and budget with our work. We do offer prototype meetings as well that provide a sneak peek of the floral pieces and how it flows with other design elements.

How much can you change after the prototype day? Can you request a second prototype day if it isn’t what you wanted?

Sophie and Mazzi: The prototype day is super flexible, but the earlier you have it, the better. We work on flower orders months in advance, but nothing is truly set in stone. If you really wanted to, we could start from scratch, but some flowers are only available seasonally, so that is something to keep in mind. You can request a second prototype meeting, but there might be some fees associated given the cost of the product. We have seen couples decide to change colors or switch out linens after seeing the product put together, so we always recommend scheduling one.

How do you recommend budgeting for flowers?

Sophie and Mazzi: Based off my estimate, our average bride spends about 20-25% of their wedding budget on florals. However, that number is not right for everyone. Your budget should reflect your desires exactly, not going above or below that. To help stretch your budget as far as possible, your vendor should be looking for ways to step outside the box. One way we do that is by repurposing everything from centerpieces to floral installations. If it is used in the ceremony, why not use it in the reception too?

Do you have any advice for couples when trying to choose flowers for their wedding?

Sophie and Mazzi: Trust your vendor! Invest in a vendor who is a right match for you, captures your vision, and has ideas to elevate your vision. Our happiest brides are the ones who come to us with a budget for flowers and ask us how to spend it. We can take that much farther when we’re not having to focus on incorporating specific, smaller details.
