Revisiting Katie Jones and John Templeton’s Whimsical Wedding

Did you know you can have a unicorn at your wedding? It’s true. This couple enlisted the help of a unicorn to pass out late-night snacks and dance-floor props—just a few of the nontraditional touches that can make a reception of any size or scale memorable.

Memorable details are what make a wedding, and Katie Jones and John Templeton didn’t skip even one at their March 2019 wedding. Following a traditional ceremony at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the couple and their guests moved the party to the Templeton’s home for the reception, featuring whimsical touches, splashy florals, twinkle lights—even a unicorn with a fairy. “The whole wedding,” says Molly Rasmussen, wedding planner with Pop Parties, “was designed to have guests ask, ‘Did we just dream about that party?’” The invitations’ custom, hand-painted artwork ensured that no two invites were the same, and the colorful watercolor wedding cake was created to complement the invitation suite. Partygoers were treated to custom maracas made into moons, stars, and even replicas of the bride and groom and their two dogs. In keeping with the reception’s dreamlike theme, Lark the unicorn helped pass out late-night snacks and dance-floor props.
