Your engagement shoot should reflect who you and your partner are as a couple. But sometimes it can be hard to express your unique personalities in just one look. D’marosay McAfee worked with photographer Sarah Kate to capture her and fiancé Gersom Adu’s love story with, not one, but three different settings and styles.
No one could deny that then-University of North Texas students D’marosay and Gersom had chemistry together. Chemistry class, that is. “Unbeknownst to me, we had been in the same chemistry class,” says D’marosay. “Somehow, Gersom was able to get my information and contacted me one day after school.” They quickly became inseparable, and a few years later, engaged.
The American-born D’marosay and Ghanaian-born Gersom were intentional about their looks for their dual-location engagement session. The first shoot, at the Dallas Arboretum, featured their “breezy American look.” Their second look, shot in studio, incorporated ensembles made from Ghanaian kente cloth, while a third blended Western outfits and Ghanaian jewelry. “I wanted our engagement shoot to honor our roots separately and showcase a fusion of both cultures together,” says D’marosay.
D’marosay and Gersom took this philosophy and applied it to their big day’s design as well. See more from their beautiful Olana wedding in the upcoming Fall/Winter 2024 issue of D Weddings, coming soon!
