We Love These Downright Down-Home Southern Touches from Real Local Weddings

Southern style is known for its effortless, yet polished, look. We love when we see current trends worked into local real weddings—like Maddy Coffman & Benjamin Westwick’s vintage-style cake and Christiana Josephakis & Colin Petitt’s picket fence–inspired stationery suite. From a ladylike parasol to patterned table linens and mismatched dinnerware, take inspiration from these five affairs’ down-home design for your own big day.

Totally Trellised

Ashley Proctor & Noah Brown
June 3, 2023

Ashley Proctor and Noah Brown celebrated their union with a garden-party-inspired reception, complete with a latticework escort-card display, the pattern of which was echoed on their cake. “We wanted a classic look with a Southern twist,” says the bride, who looked to planner Ashlee Nicholson, stationer Paper Planet, florist Blooms by Brookie, and baker Bronwen Cakes to make the magic happen.

Dinner at Ashley and Noah’s reception was served on mismatched china, giving the tablescapes a collected, unpretentious, at-home feel.

Icing on the Cake

Maddy Coffman & Benjamin Westwick
April 16, 2023

Like the ruffled gowns favored by many a Southern bride, overpiped cakes—also known as Lambeth cakes—are once again all the rage. Rachel Polley of Blondie’s Bake House created this one for Maddy Coffman and Benjamin Westwick.

Throw Some Shade

Laura Cisper & Max Kurzban
May 6, 2023

Before she said “I do” to groom Max Kurzban, Laura Cisper popped open a ladylike parasol for a dreamy garden stroll through the Hotel Drover’s grounds. In addition to providing relief from the May sun, she loved that it also “added to the elegant and romantic aesthetic.”

Prints of Pop

Emily Church & Brendan Keegan
May 6, 2023

Nothing says Southern like a good floral fabric. With the help of planner Chloe Allday, Emily Church and Brendan Keegan brought a touch of sunny style to their Arts District Mansion reception. “Golden hour is my favorite time of day, so I wanted to bring in warm golden yellow tones,” Emily says. “The patterned linens did just that.”

Picket Perfect

Christiana Josephakis & Colin Petitt
October 22, 2022

The trellised gate at Christiana Josephakis’ Dallas family home—where she wed Colin Petitt—served as the ideal inspiration for their invitations. “I thought it was such a wonderful way for guests to get a feel for what the wedding would feel like,” says Betty Tran Jameson of Scribbles and Swirls.
